Chanukah

Chanukah

The history of the city's Menorah goes back to when three Rabbis sitting together in a Sukkah in October 1991. They decided that it was about time Leicester had its own Giant Menorah,so sketches were drawn  up and the Leicester City Council was approached.

In December 1991, the Menorah was first erected at the corner of Victoria Park and the tradition has been maintained ever since, an extra light switched on each night for the duration of the Chanukah holiday.

In December 2004 a new event the 'Leicester Community Chanukah Lighting' was held in the Council Chambers in the Town Hall for the first time. Organised by the Leicester Hebrew Congregation with Rabbi Pink at its helm the event was attended by over 100 people and was an event to be remembered.

It has now become an annual event and this year the Leicester Community Chanukah Lighting at the Town Hall will be on Sunday 9th December 2012.
