Primary School visits
Suitable for KS1 and KS2
School visits
We offer opportunities for both Primary and Secondary School groups to visit the Synagogue. A school visit includes a guided tour of the Synagogue and Heritage Centre and a range of ‘hands on’ activities to enhance learning about the Jewish faith.
Note Regarding KS1 Groups:
Virtual Visits
If you are unable to come to Leicester we can visit you through a video call. This provides a unique experience for your pupils to see the Synagogue and learn more about the Jewish faith, without leaving the classroom.
Outreach Visits to Schools
Would you like to have a visit from one of our volunteer Ambassadors to your school? They have a great deal of knowledge and experience of Judaism to share. Our Ambassadors present information, show the students interesting objects and answer any questions your pupils may have.
Secondary School Visits
Suitable for KS3 and KS4.
This is a 90 minute interactive session which enables students to explore the Synagogue and to take part in activities relating to Shabbat, Kosher food, Stories from the Torah and Jewish festivals. The session has direct links to GCSE Specification topics such as:
-Dietary laws
-Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur
-Worship in the home
-Religious features of a Synagogue
Please confirm student numbers when booking and how many staff will be accompanying the group. We prefer a ratio of 1 to 10, if this isn’t possible then 1 to 15 is acceptable.
Educational Resources
We provide a range of resources to aid learning. These can be used independently in the classroom and to consolidate learning following a visit to the Synagogue and Heritage Centre (see School visits above). Some resources can be downloaded immediately from this website (see below) others, including PowerPoint presentations and worksheets, can be emailed directly to you, please email centremanager@lhcong.com for further information.

Loan Boxes Now Available!
Schools can borrow a suitcase of objects to use in classroom learning activities.
These cases contain a range of interesting items and activities to enhance and consolidate learning about the Jewish faith. The loan boxes can be used as stand-alone resources, or used in the classroom to investigate the Jewish faith before or after a visit to the Synagogue.
This resource offers activities to engage pupils with a range of objects which can then be used to create a classroom display or mini museum.
Box 1. provide objects relating to: the Synagogue, Hannukah and the 10 Commandments.
Box 2. contains items relating to: Jewish weddings, Passover and Shabbat.
Each box comes with a range of suggested activities aimed at older (box 1) and younger pupils (box 2).
Loan boxes can be borrowed for 3 weeks. We ask for a £20 donation at the time of booking and for schools to sign an agreement as the school will be invoiced if any of the objects are damaged.

Label the Synagogue – Learners can explore the beautiful interior of Leicester Synagogue as they complete this worksheet. They will learn about the names and uses of different features of the building including the Ark, Bimah and eternal light.

Mystery Object sheet – Learners look carefully at a photograph of an object, they try to work out what it is using observation and descriptive skills. Lots of information about the object can be found on the back of the card. This resource has many uses in teaching about Judaism, it could be used with groups as a starter activity for example, or as a stimulus for writing about the Torah. If you would like more Mystery Object sheets focusing on different Jewish objects please complete the form and we will email these to you.
